Society & Body Image

The problem with society is that it expects so much from everyone when really the only person we need to please is ourselves. Everyone thinks they need to look a certain way to be accepted in this world, to be loved, to be called beautiful. Yes I promote health and fitness, no I don’t promote a certain “body type” or how one should look. I want to make the world a HEALTHIER place. Obesity is taking over, it’s one of the biggest causes of death. I’m here to help motivate and encourage kids, teenagers, adults, to be healthy. Part of being healthy is being active and eating right. That is why my Instagram shows different exercises you can do and healthy foods you should eat. We are all made different and we all have different body types. My body is naturally muscular/skinny (I’m sure most people don’t know that I literally eat like a man. I have a very fast metabolism so I am always hungry and I am always eating). Just because a girl is rounder with more curves doesn’t mean she isn’t healthy and just because a girl is skinnier doesn’t mean she isn’t healthy. Healthy comes in all different shapes and sizes. As long as you are happy with how you look and how you feel from the inside out then that is what matters most! I promote health and fitness for the people that need a boost of happiness and self-confidence. I promote it so the people stop hating on themselves and their body each and every day. I promote it so people can love themselves , feel happier and have a lot more energy to LIVE LIFE! Being healthy doesn’t mean you have to have a six pack and your thighs shouldn’t touch – that is just how I am built from being an athlete. I don’t believe in going on diets or starving yourself and I would never promote that. I promote HEALTH, HAPPINESS, CONFIDENCE, EMPOWERMENT AND LOVING YOURSELF. After I quit cheerleading and wasn’t playing sports anymore, I stopped watching what I ate and didn’t work out as much. I felt sluggish, I had no energy, I wasn’t happy, I wasn’t healthy inside. I may have looked healthy on the outside but inside I was not. I became skinny, and once I got back to eating healthy and working out I added on more muscles and definition – which is what I wanted! Don’t listen to society of how you should look – YOU have the choice, you are in control of your body. But most of all you need to be healthy because health is the most important thing to have in life! That is why I promote health and fitness – because their are so many benefits, it improves one’s overall quality of life, and it is one thing we have absolute control and power over!

I have always had a passion for traveling. I also come from a family that travels A LOT. I’ve been to numerous countries since I was little but I’ve never been on vacation with S-Trip! Now I am looking back and really regretting not going on my grad trip with S-Trip! Why you may ask? For over 35 years S-Trip! has been a leader in student travel providing life-changing trips to over 40,000 students annually in over 40 destinations around the world. S-Trip! travelers are encouraged to become global citizens; opening their eyes to new cultures, languages, and experiences. Recently named Profit Magazine’s 25th fastest growing company in Canada, and recognized as one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies by Deloitte and CIBC, S-Trip! is a leader in student travel in North America. Find out more at www.s-trip.com.

How amazing does S-Trip! sound!? For this blog assignment we are asked to write about our dream vacation. Since I have been to places like, Italy, Spain, Costa Rica, Florida, Bahamas, and Cuba, I wanted to choose a place I’ve never been to before. I wanted to choose a place with adventure. I wanted to choose a place that all my friends would love as well. I dreamt, and dreamt, and dreamt (which didn’t take long) and pictured my whole vacation in AUSTRALIA! For years now I’ve wanted to go to Australia. When my dad was a teenager he actually travelled to Australia by himself and went to high school there. He also visited Australia just last year… he has been to almost 100 countries! My family and I also know a lot of Aussies through my brothers tennis travels – my brother has been to almost 30 countries!

Now it is my turn to expand my travel list 🙂

www.irishtimes.com

NEXT STOP, AUSTRALIA! One of the most popular places to visit. I hear my dad, and friends of friends always visiting and talking about Australia and now it is MY TURN to experience the beautiful country. For years my plan was to backpack around Australia with my best friend but since this is my DREAM VACATION, I can choose and do whatever I would like and not worry about money! No questions asked, my vacation in Australia would be an adventure of a lifetime – not resting on the beach the whole trip, I can relax on a beach in my own hometown! I want ADVENTURE…I want to DO things… I want to CHALLENGE myself… I want NEW experiences…and most importantly, I want to have FUN!

With that said, let me take you on MY adventure of a lifetime:

My DREAM vacation in Australia would be surrounding myself with ALL my best friends! I think it is so important to surround yourself with friends and make lots of memories with them. I would love to share this experience with many of my friends and bring out everyones adventurous side with me. Good thing all my friends are already very outgoing and willing to try anything so they will LOVE to come with me on my dream vacation to Australia!

Here are the adventurous excursions that will take place on my trip to Australia with my all favourite people:

http://www.cestchristine.com

Skydive over the Great Barrier Reef at Mission Beach. Yes, I said it – Skydive! It’s the #1 thing on my bucket list to complete. I get excited just thinking about it! I know all of my friends want to do it as well…and better yet, we get to sky dive over the Great Barrier Reef. The fall would be exhilarating and the view would be beautiful.

timwratephotography.wordpress.com

Journey to the centre of the earth. Hancock Gorge, Karijini National Park, Western Australia. “Journey to the centre of the earth”? Yup, that sounds cool enough for us to try!

http://www.smh.com.au

Climb Mount Gower at Lord Howe Island, NSW. I really want to climb a mountain. My dad actually climbed Mount Kilimanjaro – my turn! Once at the top of Mount Gower me and my friends would feel and know that we just accomplished something amazing together!

www.smh.com.au

Swim with whale sharks at Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia. What an experience this would be! My friends and I would hold hands, count to 3 and jump in together. Yes, we would be very scared but that’s what makes it that much more exciting!

http://www.thalabeach.com.au

Drift-snorkel in a rainforest. Mossman River, far north Queensland. After we swim with whale sharks, this snorkel in the river will seem like nothing!

http://www.news.com.au

Raft the Franklin River, Tasmania. Rafting will generate a lot of laughter and screaming with me and my friends as water splashes us when we fly down the river!

http://www.viator.com

Rain Forest Zip Line, Queensland. I’ve been to a rainforest in Costa Rica, I’ve ziplinned through a forest near my hometown, and now put those two together – rain forest zip line – and we would have the best zip lining experience ever. I don’t think me and my friends would stop screaming the whole way!

As you can see, I am a thrill seeker. I love trying new things and stepping outside of my comfort zone! After this vacation, me and my friends will be fearless and unstoppable – and hopefully come back with an Aussie accent;)! One day I will make this dream vacation a reality!

Thank you S-Trip! for sponsoring the Miss Teen Canada-World pageant! I couldn’t be more excited, it is so generous and kind of you. I would be more than thrilled to travel with S-Trip! for my first time. I already know and can tell it would be the most amazing trip ever with awesome, friendly staff! Thank you!

Sincerely,

Mackenzie White, Miss Teen Niagara Region-World 2013

Social Media

The power and influence of social media is huge these days. I love social media (as I know everyone else does)! Although, if social media is being used and abused then there are a lot of downfalls to it such as making us less social and having trouble communicating offline. However, if social media is used for the right purposes, then I believe in the greatness of it and how one’s voice can be heard by many people. For the Miss Teen Canada-World 2013 pageant, marketing/social media is 10% of our overall score and there is also a fast track award called Social Media Queen. We are asked to make a Facebook Fan Page, keep people updated on Twitter, and blog about our journey. I have very much enjoyed the social media promoting I have been doing! I spend a great amount of my time keeping everybody up to date online. I also use my sites for promoting my pageant platform of health and fitness. And yes I always make time to get off that computer screen and go outside and be active every single day – that is very important!

My Social Media Outlets:

Instagram

After the Miss Teen Ontario-World Pageant, I decided to make an Instagram page to promote my platform; health and fitness. Little did I know it would go viral! To this day I am still in shock as to how many followers I have gotten since January. I am so very thankful to currently have 38,800 followers. I love knowing I am helping thousands of people reach their fullest potential and be their healthiest self! My dream is to motivate and promote health and fitness to the world and slowly my dreams are coming true as we speak! You can follow my Instagram at “pageantfitness”.

YouTube

As I noticed my Instagram growing everyday, I decided to make a YouTube fitness account at the end of May 2013 to promote my platform in an even more personal way. I currently have 189 subscribers and over 2,600 views. I want to make many more videos and reach even higher numbers – nothing wrong with dreaming BIG! 🙂 You can click here to watch my videos and subscribe to my YouTube channel.

Facebook Fan Page

I have a Facebook Fan page I update everyone on. I currently have 773 ‘likes’ and if you haven’t already ‘liked it’ you can click here to check it out! I also have a twitter account with over 300 followers, to follow me you can click here.

Business Card

Since part of our preparation is to find sponsors to help support our journey to Miss Teen Canada-World I decided to design a business card to hand out. The front reads “Miss Teen Niagara Region-World 2013” and on the back it has my email, Facebook Fan page and my twitter account. I thought this was important to have for sponsors to contact me and check out my sites. This is my first ever business card! I never thought I would have a business card at age 19 – crazy!

Newspaper Articles

Right after winning the title of Miss Teen Niagara Region-World 2013, I headed straight for the newspaper offices to get my name out there! I was featured in the Niagara This Week newspaper and the St. Catharines Standard. They expressed the details of the pageant, my platform and how I am seeking support from my community. Since then I was just recently featured in the Niagara This Week newspaper again to let everyone know what I’ve been up to and that I am still seeking sponsorship. I was also asked to be in the Niagara College newspaper. I was interviewed by my friend who is studying at Niagara College and was able to get my story in the paper! For the articles that are also online: Niagara This Week Newspaper article click here and Niagara College article click here.

Blog for Brock University

On top of this pageant blog I was also asked to be apart of Brock Universities blog. I was offered the opportunity to write a blog on ‘How To Get In Shape For Summer 2013’ and of course I said yes as I am a Brock University student myself! To read the article you can click here!

Defyeneurs Magazine

About a month ago I went to a motivational meeting for people who want to inspire and be inspired. I met the host Gerry Visca who is Canada’s creative coach, an inspirational speaker, author and the founder of Defyeneurs. I told him what I’ve been doing in the pageant world and he believes in me so much that he wants to interview me for his Defyeneurs magazine August issue. I cannot wait!

Endless Summer Website

Lastly, another way I have used social media is being on my sponsors websites. As Endless Summer Tanning being one of my sponsors they wanted me to be on their website to generate more traffic for them and to help get my name out there! I can’t thank Endless Summer enough or all their help and I am so honoured to be on their website!

My Story

My scoliosis X-ray pictures

Now this is going to be hard to write about! A lot of people don’t know this about me but I am diagnosed with a mild case of scoliosis. As I have blogged about before, I have played many sports as a kid, I am very athletic, and I love to be active! Health and fitness is definitely a passion of mine which is why it is my pageant platform. I come from an active, competitive family so I grew up always trying to be the best I can be. At an early age of 5 I got into gymnastics and I loved it. I stayed with the sport for about 8 years competitively. The year I quit gymnastics, when I was about 13, I had an accident on the balance beam. Long story short, I fell backwards and landed hard right on my tailbone on the 4 inch wide piece of wood (a.k.a the balance beam). Yes it hurt, but I thought nothing of it years afterwards. Right when I quit gymnastics, which was the hardest and most emotional thing I ever did, I joined competitive cheerleading. As a cheerleader I was the girl with the muscles so I was a base, which held up 100+ pounds of girl above my head. I was also a tumbler so I did a lot of flips and tricks. However, with all that force on my back, over the years, my back was in so much pain that I had to quit cheerleading after 5 years (just last year I quit). This is my first year not in a sport – which is why I am so dedicated to the gym! I’ve never even had a gym membership until about 2 years ago. My physio and chiropractor have stated that my scoliosis is permanent and the only thing I can do is lots of back and abdominal exercises to keep my back strong. Almost everyday I am in pain – I can’t sit for too long and I can’t stand for too long. But with lots of positive thinking, keeping a smile on my face and working hard to strengthen my body, I know in time my back will get better!

Love Yourself

Nobody is perfect. Imperfections and confidence is what makes someone beautiful. I love the quote “Be Your Own Kind Of Beautiful”. To me that means, being YOU, having inner beauty, being confident, and loving all your unique characteristics. There is no one like you in the world so why would we want to be anyone else? Different is OK. Perfect is BORING. You are a gift, nothing would be the same if you didn’t exist. We need to learn to love our imperfections – I accept my scoliosis, it makes me who I am. There is no point dwelling on something you can’t change. What you need to do is learn to love your imperfections and WORK IT! Another important factor to loving yourself is to stop comparing yourself to others. I just focus on being the best version of myself that I can possibly be. It’s not selfish to love yourself, take care of yourself, and to make your happiness a priority. It’s necessary.

WE ARE ALL OUR OWN FRUIT LOOP

I hope everyone had a great Canada Day Weekend as did I! I am so proud to be Canadian and I am so excited that there is only ten days left until the Miss Teen Canada-World pageant!

But aside from being a busy bee preparing for the pageant, I have also been following my dreams in the modelling world! Ever since I was little I’ve wanted to be a model. Every year I would watch the Victoria Secret Fashion Show and dream about being a supermodel just like them! I have always had a passion for it. When I was about 11, I took modelling classes in St. Catharines which included runway, makeup, how to pose, how to audition and more. I also did a Miss Teen St. Catharines pageant and actually won it! From then on I’ve been dreaming BIG! My passion has always been there and now I have brought it back to life.

Since the Miss Teen Ontario pageant in January I have been putting myself out there and practicing how to model and pose as much as I can! I have got in touch with many people and have done several photo shoots. Once I do one photo shoot, I become obsessed and want to do more – I swear it is what I am meant to do with my life. I am very comfortable in front of the camera now and I love learning and growing. I have noticed a HUGE difference with how much better I have become with posing and being more relaxed during photo shoots. I am definitely improving which goes to show that practice makes perfect!

Here I want to show you some of the pictures from the photo shoots I have done in the past few months.

The pictures to the right and left were taken by my hair dresser, Kathy Sitarski, at The Hairitage in Vineland. She has recently started to take up photography and is also one of my sponsors! I have done two photo shoots with her. Thank you for sponsoring me:).

These pictures were taken by a photographer in St. Catharines that takes complimentary pictures to help people build their portfolios. It was very nice of him to take time out of his day to help me practice! I have actually done two different photo shoots with him now, all different outfits and scenery.

These photos, to the left and right, were just taken a couple weeks ago by a local photographer who is amazing! Her name is Nichala Cutts and you can click here to visit her website. She is a friend of a friend and offered to help me out and take pictures for me. I especially wanted pictures of fitness to help with my pageant platform of promoting health and fitness!

These next pictures were actually taken for a flower company. I saw a post on Facebook looking for a last minute model to take pictures with a flower crown. I couldn’t pass that up! I jump on any opportunity I come across :). The pictures were done by Angela Y. Martin, Gemini Photography. And the pictures were done for her mother, Cathy Martin Flowers located in Niagara On The Lake. She even wrote a blog about my pictures on her flower website, you can click here to check it out!

And last but not least, I did a photo shoot with a professional photographer from Toronto. I got this contact from my friends aunt. My friends aunt is actually a ex-international model and lives in my town! We have become very close and she has made up my portfolio with my pictures and we are headed to Toronto next week to talk to a bunch of angencies! I AM SO EXCITED:).

So much has happened in the past few months since the Miss Teen Ontario-World pageant and I am so grateful! I have grown so much as a person and have become very independent. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for me!

AHHHH 11 more days! I am so so excited! Let me update you all on what I’ve been doing in the past week or so as Miss Teen Niagara Region-World.  🙂

On Friday, June 21st I volunteered at the Grand Opening of the Heartland Forest. It is located in Niagara Falls, Ontario and it is a registered charitable organization. The heartland forest is a place with special accommodations for the physically challenged. Heartland Forest Nature Experience has many complementary facilities such as: trails, fishing pond, picnic shelters, informative signs, butterfly garden, observation and rest stations, playground, larger than life animal carvings, mini-putt and one of Canada’s largest tree-houses that offers a panoramic view of the forest. The property was purposefully designed around accessibility. There is even a custom built swing and a merry-go-round in the play area and a unique fire pit area that will all accommodate wheelchairs safely and with ease!

Artist Jaswinder

For the Heartland Forest Grand Opening they featured “I Am Coyote” art show which showcased and celebrated the beauty of coyote. It featured a variety of art and artists from across North America. They also had a symbolic Friends of Laura Secord walk and the trails were wheelchair and all-ability accessible. I helped out with the signing of the “heart” card located in the picture above for everyone to be remembered that they took part on such a special day. I even had the pleasure to meet one of the artists. His name is Jaswinder Singh and he showed me all of his coyote pictures – they were amazing, I wish I could draw that well! I was so honoured to be part of an amazing event that allows the physically challenged to have fun and access many facilities – I think it is such a great idea.

Another event I took part in and probably my favourite event I have made an appearance at was on Sunday, June 23rd. I was offered to be apart of the 52nd Annual Welland Rose Festival! I was honoured to have the amazing opportunity to participate in the Rose Parade! This was my first ever parade and I didn’t know what to expect. It is safe to say I didn’t realize there was going to be hundreds (seemed more like thousands) of people along the streets watching this parade! I was definitely in shock when driving down the first street. I had an absolute blast though, especially sitting on top of a convertible! Everyone was cheering, clapping and waving as I drove by them and it felt great (although, it was a tad tiring waving and smiling for over an hour but I stayed strong haha)! My favourite part was the little kids saying “hi princess!” or “are you a princess!?”… so cute! I felt like a role model for kids to look up to someone with goals and dreams. I definitely loved the support I was getting from the crowd as they were congratulating me! Lets just say… I love the Niagara Region and I can’t thank everyone enough! 🙂

MUD, SWEAT AND CHEERS!

Starting line

On Sunday, June 9th I volunteered at the FirstOntario Kids 1K Ultimate Challenge. I thought this was an amazing event for the kids of Niagara especially since my platform is to promote health and physical activity for children! The event was located at Burgoyne Woods, in St. Catharines. It went from 10:30am to 2:30pm and it included the obstacle experience, lunch, raffle tickets, access to the Kids Zone and a gift! It was a fun filled day with over 250 kids. Children aged 4 – 14 experienced a 1K obstacle course full of challenges and surprises, designed to test each child’s level of endurance, stamina, strength and agility while encouraging teamwork and community spirit! And children who did not fall within the age category of 4-14 could still come out and enjoy the day!

The sponsor of this event just so happen to be where my mom works; First Ontario Credit Union. My mom and I both volunteered together and our job was to help kids at the obstacle course. We were assigned the first obstacle of the course which was where the kids ran through big tires. We cheered the kids on, made sure they didn’t fall, helped them up when they did fall, and picked up their shoe when they lost it in the tire. I really enjoyed volunteering and watching the kids have an absolute BLAST! Another reason I loved this event was because there are so many races/obstacle courses out there nowadays for teens and adults such as Tough Mudder, The O Course, Spartan Race, etc. but none for kids! As somebody who has completed the Tough Mudder course before (last year), when I saw the kids running the

It was like a mini Tough Mudder

FirstOntario Kids Ultimate Challenge it seemed exactly like I was at a Tough Mudder race. It was so much fun to see the kids stretching at the starting line, having fun with friends and family but also having this slight competitive spirit. The parents were running along side the younger kids the whole way and the other parents cheering everyone on at the sideline! It makes me happy to know that our community is engaging kids into more and more physical activity.

FirstOntario chose to partner with the St. Catharines General Hosipital

Me helping and cheering on the kids!

Foundation in support of the Children’s Health Unit which supports children up to age 18 in all of Niagara. Proceeds from this event went to the Children’s Health Unit and participants were encouraged to collect pledges for this great cause! Their hard work supported equipment purchases for the benefit of children their age.

Hello hello hello! Sorry I haven’t blogged in almost a week (so unlike me!), but I have been very busy with appearances, volunteering, and photo shoots which I will blog about ASAP 🙂 But first, let me just rewind to over a week ago.

On Saturday, June 15th I participated in the Toronto Fitness Challenge which was held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Thanks to Fit Factory Fitness for putting on this once in a lifetime event! The purpose of the challenge was to raise money for SickKids Foundation and to break Guinness World Records! I had the amazing honour to be one of the ambassadors for the big day. As an ambassador I promoted the Toronto Fitness Challenge on all of my social media outlets to spread the word; the more the merrier!

Boot Camp!

When the fitness challenge arrived, it was an action packed day where we all came together and attempted to break Guinness World Records to raise $100,000 for the SickKids Foundation. However, the Toronto fitness challenge wasn’t all about breaking records, they wanted to highlight the importance of fitness as well. The money raised went to the Healthy Active Kids program at the Hospital for Sick Children. There were celebrity guests and first-class fitness, relationship and social media experts that kept us entertained all day live on the main stage and in exhibitor

Me and my friend during the Salsa class

booths. There was the latest products and services to improve your overall health for people of all ages and levels of fitness. I learned a lot about the latest fitness, beauty and wellness products. It was a day all about living your best, healthiest life (which goes right along with my platform of promoting health and fitness)!

The four Guinness World Record attempts were:

  1. Largest Boot Camp Class – goal of 2,500 people

    Yoga class!

  2. Largest Yoga Class – goal of 5,000 people
  3. Largest Salsa Dance – goal of 2,000 people
  4. Largest Harlem Shake – goal of 10,000 people

Although we didn’t break the records listed above, we still raised money for a great cause which is the most important part.

Ryan Lapadat

But wait… other records were broken…

Ryan Lapadat successfully broke the Guinness World Record for squatting the most number of people in under 1 minute. There were 12 participants which equalled over 1300 pounds. I saw this go down with my own eyes! Also, Suresh Joachim broke the Guinness World Record for the longest moonwalk. He  moonwalked in a circle for over 3 hours…YES 3 HOURS!

Tony, the Co-Founder of Fit Factory Fitness!

That concluded an amazing event! Together as one big fitness family, we raised over $13,000 in support of SickKids Foundation! Not to mention I met so many great people and potential sponsors for my pageant! Thank you Fit Factory for including me in this unforgettable day, I had so much fun (and I was so sore after that boot camp)!

On a side note: I am sending prayers and positive energy to those affected by the flooding in Calgary. If you would like to donate to the Canadian Red Cross please call 1-800-418-1111 or go online to www.redcross.ca. Text 30333 to automatically donate $5 to flood relief.

Here is the second half of my blog post on “My Tips to a Healthier Lifestyle”. To read the first half on healthy eating you can click here.

Working Out

As I said before you need to be eating healthy AND working out to live the ultimate healthy lifestyle! Yes, the hardest thing about exercise is to start doing it, but once you are exercising regularly, the hardest thing to do is to stop – trust me, I’m “addicted”. I want you to put everything you have into every single workout session. You can’t expect full results if you only put in half the work. So dust off your running shoes and begin your journey to a healthier lifestyle today!

Here are my top 8 tips that work for me:

  1. Starting slow > fast. Start slowly and take baby sets when beginning your transformation. When you start fast you’re more likely to burnout quicker. You don’t need to go from being a couch potato to an all star athlete in one week. When working your way up to your goals you will notice more improvement.
  2. Intensity not duration. It is more effective to train hard for a short period of time than training for a long period of time with sub-maximal effort. I go in with a plan, get the job done, and get out.
  3. Cardio. HIIT cardio or steady state cardio? The most efficient type of cardio and my absolute favourite is HIIT – High Intensity Interval Training. It is a workout that alternates between intense bursts of activities and fixed periods of less-intense activity. Why HIIT? It burns more calories and fat, and it is less time consuming than steady state cardio!
  4. Lifting weights. Cardio alone is not the answer to reach your goal body. If you also want to be toned and see definition, do not be afraid of weights. They will not make you look bulky. I, personally, do high reps with less weight and I perform 3 sets of every exercise.
  5. Workout classes. Keep your workouts exciting! I love participating in all sorts of different workout classes at my gym. This way you don’t get bored with doing the same workout over and over again. I join classes such as Zumba, step, spin, yoga fitness, body sculpt and boxfit. Change it up every once and a while to make it more fun.
  6. At home workouts. No gym membership? No equipment? No problem. I actually love using my body weight when working out. You can find tons of home workout youtube videos or DVD’s where you can do full body workouts without using any equipment!
  7. Rest day. You don’t want to overtrain. Rest is physically necessary so that the muscles repair, rebuild and strengthen. You must have one rest day a week and the other rest days you will determine when listening to your body.
  8. Yoga. A big important part of your transformation is being connected with your body AND mind. Remember, stress is a big factor when dealing with body issues. Find inner peace and you will be a happier person which will increase your energy levels and reduce the stress in your life.

One last tip: Don’t give yourself a deadline. Healthy living is a lifestyle – it doesn’t stop when you reach your goals. Make that summer body an everyday body. I’m not telling you it’s going to be easy, I’m telling you it’s going to be worth it! Enjoy every second of your journey. Beach season and more importantly, life, is waiting for you! There is no better time than to start your new lifestyle today.

Updates

What have I been up to? Oh boy, where do I even begin! My calendar has never looked so full and I am loving every second of it! 🙂 Here are just a few updates, and yes there is much more to come!

Network Business Meeting

On Wednesday June 5th, I was up at 6:30a.m feeling like a business women! I had my blazer on, sash on, my pageant business cards in hand and I was running out the door. Why? I was heading to a breakfast network meeting in my town for 7a.m. It’s safe to say I’ve never been to something like this and surprisingly I wasn’t that nervous. I quickly practiced what I was going to say since I was going to be standing in front of a big group of business people. It’s also safe to say I was the youngest one there. I found some people to sit with and made conversation until it was my turn to stand up and tell them who I am and why I was there. The main reason I was there was because I am still looking for sponsorship from local businesses in my community. When the meeting was over, I was getting up to leave, and all of a sudden I had a line up of people wanting to congratulate me and let me know how they could help. It was a great feeling knowing I have my community supporting me through this journey! It was a successful meeting and I am proud of myself for stepping outside of my comfort zone once again.

Volunteering

Just recently I started volunteering at the Grimsby Benevolent Fund which is a registered non-profit organization that has been operating since 1965. Ever since, the GBF has made a huge difference in our community. The GBF operates a Christmas Hamper program, a food bank, clothing and housewares store and in 1992, established the Used Furniture Warehouse. The program I am volunteering for once a week is the Food Bank. The Food Bank is the primary service provided by GBF to persons of low income in Grimsby. Financial donations to the GBF Foodbank are used to purchase milk, cheese, eggs and other perishables as well as personal hygiene and grocery items when stock runs low. I am already looking forward to next week’s volunteering day, everyone is so kind!

Pictures of the fun fair to come!

Yesterday, Thursday June 13th I volunteered at Canadian Martyrs Elementary School in St. Catharines. My moms friend told me she was looking for more help so of course I volunteered as I want to help out my community in any way I can. From 3:30pm until 7p.m they were holding a Fun Fair the kids! Myself and the volunteers had 3 stations; painting nails, putting in hair extensions, and sticker tattoos. The children had an absolute blast and I must say I enjoyed myself as well.

Interview

My first newspaper interview right after the provincial pageant!

Also just yesterday morning I had my 2nd interview for Niagara This Week newspaper. The first time they interviewed me was right after the provincial pageant and now I thought I should contact them to give them an update since were a month away from the pageant (wow, time flies)! I let them know everything I’ve been doing from volunteering to fundraising, and I let them know about the upcoming events I will be making appearances in (yes exciting things to come, stay tuned!).

If you would like to contact me, my email is missteenniagara@gmail.com

Have a happy friday everyone 🙂
